IMPORTANT - Finance Update With the recent growth in the number of rowers we have out grown our old finance system. Moving forward OCRC will be moving across to the Onslow College finance system. This comes with some added benefits as you will now:
To access the Parent Portal login at https://portal.onslownet.school.nz/Pages/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f If you prefer to pay by internet banking or make regular smaller payments then you can continue to do so. Just switch your payment to the Onslow College bank account; ONSLOW COLLEGE 123174 0265002 00 If paying online by Internet Banking please ensure to use your Account Code, student name and “ROWING” in the payment details to ensure payment is applied to your School Account correctly. Your Account Code is on top of all invoices sent out by the school or can be found in the Debtors Dashboard within the portal. Your account code is usually the first five letters of your surname followed by two numbers e.g. SMITH01 If you have any questions feel free to contact our Treasurer, Mike Woods at [email protected] or on 0272776677 Please do not use the previous rowing account for any future payments. Uniform payments are the last use of the old account. WRC Subs due now A final payment of $550 for rowers and $50 for coxswains is due in now. This completes payment of the club season subs of $750 for a rower and $250 for a coxswain. This fee is on your Onslow school account. Uniforms Uniforms have been ordered on the goodwill that all payments will be completed. So if you have not paid yet, then please do so ASAP. Thank you! As stated above, uniform payments still need to go into our old rowing account. This is the last use of the old rowing account. LTR Incident Report Submissions were requested by school email on the 14 Oct, which was sent to the whole OCRC group, asking for feedback on the LTR camp incident. These submissions are currently being collated and summarised by OC Deputy Principal Penny Kinsella and together with Principal Sheena Millar, they will provide a presentation to the OCRC Executive Committee next week. Any recommendations, improvements, changes in processes, or assurance of compliance to water safety procedures etc will be documented by Penny into a report that will be provided to the wider OCRC group. This report is expected to be available in early November. Parent Help request for camps and regattas If you would like to help at any of the season camps and regattas, then please let Stephanie know. [email protected] Being part of the action is always good fun. It’s a great chance to spend time with your teenager and their mates! So first off the block is KR1 at Karapiro which is only 6 weeks away.
See the regatta and camp schedule on the website: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/regattas--camps.html Rowit - https://www.rowit.co.nz/ This is a great site for parents to keep in touch with the live results while the students are away at regattas. View the Day Sheet for race events, times and results. Rowers can also check their race entries here. New members and those not yet signed up, should ask to be added to the 'Onslow College Rowing' Facebook page. This is a good way of a keeping up with reminder notices for regatta trips and events, as well as photos and other things happening with the club. Finally, good luck to all or our seniors sitting exams soon. Nga mihi Stephanie https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/

It’s great to see a very busy LTR in action so welcome to all our LTR families as well. I hope you are all enjoying it. A big thank you to all our coaches involved with this. Dates for your Diary
Book Fair Success! Congratulations everyone on a very successful book fair. The preliminary count indicates that over $8000 was raised. This will be used for coach and equipment expenses and means we can retain our coach and equipment levies to the usual costs. It is also beneficial in grant applications to indicate that we do fundraising which reflects positively in grant requests. A massive thank you must go to the book fair team: Rachael Martin, Clare Stanley, Matt Seymour, Leeann Williams and Nicola Holden. There have been months of work that has gone on behind the scenes in order to make this weekend work so well. So thank you hugely to these amazing people who have taken on this ‘second job’ and can now go back to their regular day jobs! And also thank you to everyone in our rowing group – rowers and parents, for delivering fliers, baking, transporting books, doing your allocated job, turning up when requested and for some, staying way longer than expected! Thank you also to our school and Principal Sheena Millar for use of the school student centre and for the advertising exposure on the school sign at the front of the school. These were some of the key components to the book fair success. Also a shout out to Caretaker Graeme Thomas who was extremely helpful in all things logistical prior to and throughout the weekend. Well done everyone! Book Fair baking containers See the photo of left over baking containers, at the end of the DaySheet. Rachael is holding these if you want to claim one. LTR Camp Camp Depart after school Fri 27th Sept, camp starts 7.30pm Camp Return Tues 1st Oct, camp finishes 2pm LTR Camp is only 4 weeks away. Camp is held at the Wanganui Top 10 Holiday Park. We will be travelling to Wanganui after school by bus with own return transport. There will be a regatta on the Tuesday at 12noon, so it is a good way to combine coming to watch the regatta with pick up. Squad Managers will also arrange car-pooling if needed. Training will be a step up at camp with more water time and is also a lot of fun. However if you are not coming to camp, then please let Stephanie know asap. Camp cost is likely to be approx. $250, but more information on the camp will be issued soon. There will also be a LTR Camp meeting for LTR-ers and parents on Friday 20th Sept after training. LTR Camp Coordinator is Lynda Duncan if you have any further questions. email: [email protected] LTR Camp Consent/Membership Forms You have now been sent the LTR camp consent and membership forms. Please complete and return these this week. Thank you. LTR / Spring Training Fees Due $210 Acct: 02-0500-0978726-83 $210 is now due for new rowers continuing in the LTR programme and for experienced rowers. This is a down payment on the WRC subscription fee which is $750 this year. If you are not yet participating in training due to winter sport commitments, then the full $750 will still be required in early October. WRC coxswain fee remains at $250 for the season. Thank you. Indicative season costs are available on the website: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/costs.html OCRC AGM Date: Tue 22nd Oct Time: 7.15pm Location: Onslow College Student Centre All current committee members are willing to re-stand for election. However, if anyone else also wants to find out about any of the committee roles or wants to stand for election, then nominations must be received by 30th September. You can speak to any of the current committee for further information. Currently elected committee members:
Every committee member has a specific role and various responsibilities they undertake during the season. The role covers the full calendar year. Additional committee members include a coach rep, school rep, rower rep and 2 life members. Further details on the AGM will be provided shortly. WRC Scholarship Fund A scholarship fund was started last season by WRC Alumni and there were two recipients last year, one school rower and one Club rower. If interested, see the website for the application form and the process details: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/resources.html The applications are open now and close on the 31st October. An announcement will be made by the end of the first week in November. We cannot guarantee funding either in full or as a proportion. Allocations will be based on the amount held in the fund at the time of closing and the genuine need stated. Please be explicit when answering as this will help determine outcomes. After a short break we are back! Not quite embarking on the official season as winter sport still has priority over summer sport at the moment. But there are plenty of rowing activities kicking off and it’s great to see lots of rowers getting involved. Dates for your Diary
Winter Training this weekend Rowers, please bring spanners. Some training may be at North End, but tbc Sat morning.
Rowing Season Commencement Welcome back to another great season of rowing ahead! The Onslow College rowing season officially kicks off with the LTR programme, details below. If you are undecided about returning to rowing, then you are welcome to come to these sessions and to talk to the coaches about any concerns. If you are still playing winter sport, then remember to complete your winter sports commitments before using the LTR days for commencing rowing training but if you can fit in both then that would be beneficial. There will be some sessions where you may help train new LTR recruits and sessions where you will do your own training. Coaches will keep in contact with you as well. WRC Opening of 2019/20 Season:
LTR / Spring Training LTR and spring training for existing rowers begins Friday 16th August with the following schedule:
LTR / Spring Training Camp
LTR Promotion at School If you know students interested in rowing at school, then please spread the word. We need to get a good intake of new novice rowers to keep the programme viable and cost effective. Apart from the fact that it is a great sport to learn many skills beneficial for both on and off the water, being a fantastic environment for teamwork and friendships and keeping super fit for winter sports trials! Please encourage others to come along and try out the LTR programme. All year groups welcome and the first 2 weeks are free.
Direct anyone interested in rowing to the rowing website for more info: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/about.html Season Calendar on the website The season calendar is on the website - to start planning your family holidays around rowing! https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/regattas--camps.html Book Fair
You will have received the spreadsheet with your job allocation with the flyers for distribution to come. We really need all our members to get behind the book fair as it is our only fundraiser and is vital for funds towards coach and equipment expenses which make our own overall rowing costs slightly cheaper. Please contact your squad manager or Rachael Martin if you have any questions or need to swap a shift. [email protected] OCRC AGM Save the date for the OCRC AGM:
WRC Board The structure of the WRC committee and Board is changing slightly at the WRC AGM and while the date for nominations for board members have now past, they would still be keen to hear particularly from school parents as representatives of student rowers. If you are interested in a role on the Board or want to find out about what the Board does, then contact coach Jared Cummings. No rowing experience is needed as the Board provides a governance role which is currently lacking in school representation. [email protected] Finally, Welcome back! Maadi Cup Wrap Up Congratulations to all of our rowers on a successful Maadi finish to the season. Two thirds of our rowers raced into 13 Finals including 8 A and B Finals with a mix of boys and girls crews. It was great to have Principal Sheena Millar attend for a day to watch and support the heat races. And we wish our 3 departing rowers – Isaac, Harry and Fin all the best for any future rower endeavours and other ventures beyond school later this year. Thank you from OCRC for your involvement and leadership you have shown over your years and in particular your senior year. Maadi photos are on the website. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPA3wwzrhn2Pud5oX_mIQ_7WOf4uROoArp_EDb2tNnZcNtq92CrAwi3yhU8EoXRrQ?key=RTJwRFNOMGMwVm42NE5QSTVZZkV2eC1VTUs0Y3pB WRC Prize Giving Prize Giving is Sat 4th May, 7pm – upstairs in the function room. Onslow College rowers and parents, please come along to support the event. There are a number of Onslow College rower nominations. The prize giving is followed by a supper. Grant update Awesome news, we have been awarded both grants that we applied for in the purchase of a new Four. So, together with our own funds, the order for the boat is underway and will be available for use in the new season. New Raffle Roster From Rachael Mora: Thank you for all your efforts with the 1841 raffle over the past few months. We were able to put $1300 of the funds raised towards our transport costs for NISSC which was a great result for half an hours work each! We are continuing on with the raffle for the time being, and I have attached a new version of the roster fyi. Please check the date that you are rostered on to and put it in your diary. If you are not able to do your rostered day please arrange a swap yourself and let me know. I will send a reminder and detailed instruction out to you on the Monday prior to your rostered day, but feel free to give me a call in the meantime if you have any questions. If you are undecided about returning to rowing next season, then please consider still doing your raffle allocation, even if it is as a departing gesture of goodwill! Thanks again for your continued support Cheers, Rachael - 021 329 629 WRC Parent Rowing / Corporate Challenge Parents, if you want to experience what all the hype is about, then WRC are looking for parent crews in their corporate challenge to engage across all of the member groups. No experience necessary or age limit or the need to be competitive! See the flyer attached. Apparently Marsden and St Pats have done several parent crews before, so it would be great to have an Onslow crew or 2. If anyone is slightly mumbling interest about this, then let Stephanie know, so we can give a heads up to WRC who are wanting to sort coaching requirements.
Season Thank you! As said at our end of season celebration, a huge thank you to:

Contact Stephanie if you want to claim anything. Congrats for US scholarships Congratulations again to Constance and Olivia on gaining scholarships to US Universities – Constance to Miami University and Olivia to Yale University. They both head off in August to begin their 4 year degrees and join the US Uni rowing crews. Constance intends to study Finance and Olivia to study Computer Science. OCRC wishes you all the best. Finally, have a good rowing break everyone and enjoy your winter sports. There will probably be some winter training kicking off around June / July for anyone who is interested in some land based fitness. This would be optional only. The official season will commence at the LTR programme in August, but also remember that winter sport will still take precedence until that is completed. Hope to see you all back again next season. The countdown is on to the season finale regatta championships (time flies – when you’re not the one sweating it out!) With NISSC and Maadi coming up, this is where all of the hard work pays off. But remember that success comes in many forms, from regatta results of making finals, achieving medals, personal and crew bests and also from the skills gained over the season for the teamwork, time management, friendships, work ethic and the fitness achieved. Dates for your Diary
NISSC Regatta – departs this Thur 7th Mar Be at Onslow College top quad for bus loading at 7am in your travel uniform – polo, hoodie. Bus departs at 7.30am. Reminders:
Regattas / Camps - Individual mattresses required for sleeping Parents, please ensure your rower has their own bed for regattas and camps. Rowers are not allowed to share double air mattresses. It is important that every rower gets a good night’s rest and sharing is not conducive to that. A single air mattress from the Warehouse is $12. Maadi Cup Regatta & Parent help required Congratulations to everyone on being selected to compete at Maadi Cup 2019. The Maadi Cup is Australasia’s biggest secondary school sports event. Over 2000 competitors from more than 120 schools are expected and around 10,000 people watch on Finals day. Our Principal Sheena Millar will be coming to watch us on Monday and Tuesday. Maadi is an 8 day away event, so setting up a roster of parent help could be a good way to share the work. So if you want to schedule yourself into a few days, then let me know: [email protected].
Maadi & school work Tina will be supervising homework sessions in the downtime between races while the rowers are at Maadi. Onslow College teachers have been informed of who is attending NISSC and Maadi, but students should ask each of their teachers for any appropriate work that might need to be completed while they are away. Maadi Tees The art work for the tees has gone to the printer (thanks Angela and Jane) and should be available for approval this week. Orders will need to be placed asap when called for, in order to get the tees before leaving for Maadi. End of season celebration – Thurs 11th April Save the date for our sport end of season celebration:
We’ll also bring the season left over lost property. See you there! Coach Levy and Equipment Levy due in Coach levy and equipment levy, both set at $100 each, are now due in and any other outstanding camp or regatta fees. Pay into the rowing account. If you need to discuss any rowing costs, then contact Mike Woods:[email protected] Thank you for your prompt payments! Grants and Fundraising update Well done to everyone on the raffle fundraising. We put $1300 towards the cost of the NISSC bus which reduced the overall NISSC regatta fee. We have just been awarded a grant of $9750 to go towards a new Four and in combination with our own funds, we are two thirds of the way to purchasing it. We have one more grant application pending. The school sports office is currently applying for a summer tournament grant, so there may be a contribution coming that can go towards individual rower’s Maadi cost. Tbc. Thank you to Sarah and Rosie for looking into this for the rowers and the other summer sports groups. Summer – Winter sport cross-over Just a reminder about the cross over between summer and winter sport starting up. The school has a policy that you must finish your current season sport commitments before commencing the next season sport. This is applicable if there are any winter sport trainings about to clash with the current rowing trainings. But if you have a trial you need to attend, then let your coach know or if it clashes with a regatta, then hopefully you can make up for the trial in another way. National Champs Huge congratulations to our Junior Coach (and ex Onslow cox) Ella Greenslade who achieved a Red Coat at Nationals. The Red Coat is given upon winning a premier event. Ella successfully coxed her RPC crew to Gold in the Women’s Prem 8+. Well done Ella. Fin and Harry were also competing and congrats to Fin for placing 3rd in the Mens Exhibition Intermediate Doubles. Ex Onlsow rowers, Constance, Olivia, Alice and Oli were also competing. Important Notice - Bus Parent and wearing seatbelts on the bus A heads up to all parents of rowers regarding the wearing of seat belts on the bus. OCRC ensures to charter a coach which is fitted with seatbelts. The legal requirement is that if a bus is provided with seat belts, then they must be worn. If the bus is inspected by the police enroute and passengers are found not to be wearing seatbelts, then there could be a fine imposed to the passenger concerned. While our bus parent will tell the rowers to wear seatbelts at the beginning of the bus trip, it is not their responsibility to ensure the rowers are wearing their seatbelts through-out the duration of the trip. Parents please discuss the benefits of wearing a seatbelt on the bus and the implications of not in the (unlikely) event of an accident. The bus parent cannot be expected to monitor rowers wearing or not wearing their seatbelts during a bus trip and OCRC will not hold the bus parent responsible for any incidents on a bus trip if the rower is not wearing a seatbelt. Wanganui Regatta – departs this Fri 8th Feb Be at Onslow College top quad for bus loading at 3.35pm in your travel uniform – polo, hoodie. Bus departs at 4pm. Reminders:
Maadi Cup Regatta - Parent help required While the official selection of Maadi crews is still to be formally announced, it would be good to start planning the parent help to allow for people to apply for annual leave if required. Maadi is an 8 day away event, so setting up a roster of parent help could be a good way to share the work. So if you want to tentatively schedule yourself into a few days, then let Stephanie know.

Raffle Fundraiser at 1841 Thanks to everyone for doing the raffle fundraiser at 1841. We are slowly building up our NISSC bus fund and I’m sure everyone agrees that this is a nice easy way to raise funds. Onslow College Rowing Season Squad We have 25 new Novices in the group, making a total of 51 Onslow rowers this season, which is fantastic! The students are continuing to be coached by a very experienced, successful and enthusiastic coaching team. A huge thank you to our coaches for taking on yet another rowing season with our students. Training times have been sent out to all rowers and it is important to communicate with your coach contact or one of the lead coaches if you cannot make it to training. Welcome Novice Girls: Artikah, Jane, Ana, Angela, Anuha, Giuliana, Louise, Mila, Pepi, Phoebe, Rosa, Rose Welcome Novice Boys: Chris, Connor, Daniel, Isaac, Jacob, JJ, Liam, Nathan, Thomas, Torri, Jarrod, Mason, Zac Dates for your Diary · Sun 21st Oct - WRC School Rowers BBQ · Sat 27th Oct - Porirua Goodwill regatta · Sun 28th Oct WRC Rowathon · Wed 31st Oct OCRC AGM AGM: 31st October, 7pm Student Centre The AGM is an important part of our club administration and governance. We welcome all members (parents or rowers) to attend and find out more about the running of the club and how the parent committee and coaching teams work together to ensure the smooth running of rowing at Onslow College. Keith, our club secretary will be sending out the papers for this meeting shortly. Rowathon The WRC Rowathon is on Sunday 28th Oct. All WRC club members are expected to participate if you can. The rowathon is run from 7am to 5pm and all rowers will be allocated into a team and a 1.5hr time slot where you will erg for 30 mins, swap out for 30 mins and erg again for 30mins. The Onlsow configuration of teams is different to the advertised flyer, so our teams will consist of 10-odd rowers per team (mixed with experienced rowers and novice rowers) rather than the flyer advertised 6. Any funds that you can raise will be much appreciated, please do not consider it mandatory to raise the flyer suggested funds per rower. Half of your funds raised will go towards plant and operations at WRC and half goes to rower own personal funds held by Onslow Rowing Club. So it is a good opportunity to raise some of your own funds. Rachael Mora will be setting up the schedule for this event and the student coaches and other Year 13 rowers will be supervising the teams on the day (Thank you in advance of being asked!). Rachael will be in touch with everyone soon. The Rowathon flyer and sponsorship form is attached. 1841 Raffle Fundraiser This is off to a good start, we have done 2 weeks of the Quiz night raffle ticket selling and I think the boys who have done their duty will say that it is an easy fundraiser. The roster and instructions were issued earlier, so please mark your allocated date into your calendar. A parent needs to accompany the rowers on their allocated duty day and it is easiest to make an electronic payment ($60 plus any tips) into the rowing account upon completion and you keep the cash. Rachael Mora is now coordinating this regular event and will remind you prior to your Wednesday duty. If you need to change your allocated date, then please contact Rachael and let her know. [email protected] Uniforms Uniform information has been sent to Squad Managers and all orders are due back with your Squad Managers by 19th Oct. This is for the polo, cap and hoodie. If you need a rowsuit, then please contact Stephanie. [email protected] Samples are still here for another week for trying on sizes.. U16Boys sizes were collected at camp. Novices do not need rowsuits this year. You will be allocated Onslow singlets for the season to wear with your own black bike shorts. WRC Schools BBQ Sun 21st October 2pm Wellington Rowing Club hold an annual meet and Greet BBQ for all affiliated school rowers and parents. This is a great chance to meet rowers from other schools and get to know a little about the club. All rowers and parents welcome: 2pm Sunday 21st October at the Club School Sports Awards They will be held on Wednesday 24th October at 6.45pm in the Raroa School Hall. Onslow College Rowing Facebook page If rowers and parents have Facebook, then request to join the 'Onslow College Rowing' page. Notices, results and photos are posted here throughout the season. WRC Subs due in in October A final payment of $500 for rowers $50 for coxswains is due by the end of October. This completes payment of the club season subs of $700 for a rower and $250 for a coxswain. Please pay into the Onslow rowing account: 02 0500 0978726 83. When you make electronic payment please put your rower name in as reference LTR Camp Wrap Up from Steph Another successful Onslow College learn to row camp was completed over the first weekend of the school holidays. We had 24 keen novices perfecting their rowing skills under the nurture and guidance of our experienced rowers and the wider coaching team. A total of 46 rowers were on camp and we are now moving into the season with 51. The rowers were on the water training 3 times per day in nearly all perfect water conditions so there was lots of time for a good mix of work and play. Despite the usual round of challenges with dodgy boat trailers, a 300km round trip to retrieve a ditched boat, calf muscle sprains, rolled ankles, the duty of the night patrol squad, the odd sickness, a hospital sleep over and the appeasing of the parent help’s rowing dreams (thank you T&D and Brent for humouring us – it was always going to be about the look!), everyone had a great time and probably came home quite tired, but with a huge advancement in rowing skills for the novices and a great start to the experienced rowers' season training. We finished the camp with our annual LTR regatta where crews of novice rowers mixed amongst our experienced rowers to vie for the revered Warrick Fowlie gumboot trophy in front of a huge support home crowd. Congrats to the winning team 'Chris “the system” Farro' (despite Chris not being in the team!) who scored the rights to autograph the strip of strapping tape that wraps the gumboot. A huge thank you to our fabulous experienced coaches, Jason, Jared, Brent, Warrick, Dylan, Tina and a special thanks to our new senior student coaches for stepping up to the coaching challenge - Liam, James, Alice, Maggie, Ella and especially to Terry and Deidre for organising and coaching yet another LTR camp (something like number 16!). Also a big thank you to the parent help who ensure our rowers and coaches are fed, watered, happy and healthy – Sarah, Paul, Lynda, Suzanne, Philip, John and Steph (aka ‘Fab U54s’!). And ultimately thank you to all of the rowers who are a great group of students that are keen to give their best which makes the camp enjoyable for everyone. This is my final day sheet – the President-elect Stephanie Clark will take over from here. It has been a privilege to be involved with the running of Onslow College rowing and I wish you all the best for the season ahead. Nga mihi Olwyn Thank you to the exiting Committee Members On that note of Olwyn’s final DaySheet and the upcoming AGM, on behalf of all of the Onslow College Rowing Group, I would like to extend a very heart-felt thank-you to our hard-working departing committee members: Olwyn Crutchley as President, Raewyn Henderson as Treasurer and Keith Rodgers as Secretary. It has been a pleasure to work with all of you over the last three years and we have hugely valued your dedication and input into the running of our school rowing programme, not only with the committee roles but also in all of the routine operations including being the lead and parent help on many camps and regattas from all 3 of you. And not that you get away too easily, as all or your children are now helping in coaching roles, so we will no doubt, still see you around on the rowing scene! Thank-you from Stephanie and OCRC |
