Norton Cup
Thanks to everyone for contributing to another local regatta win for WRC! It was especially awesome to see our novice rowers out on the water for your first regatta and some great results for our experienced crews. Looks like we are set up to have a great season. Our next Regatta is another Wellington based one - the Queens Cup on November 11. Coaches will let you know what is involved and which crews will be entered Rowathon Great work everyone for the Rowathon today. Don’t forget to deposit the funds you raised into the rowing account – with reference your name and rowathon. Funds are split 50/50 between WRC and your rowing account. OCRC AGM Thanks to those people who came to the AGM, we got it done in record time and can confirm the new committee roles are as follows: President Olwyn Crutchley Secretary Keith Rogers Treasurer Raewyn Henderson Member Stephanie Clark Member Paul Smart The rest of the committee are: Life Members Terry McCarthy and Deidre Burke Lead Coach Jared Cumming School Rep Tina Manker Student Rep TBC We have not had a chance to hold an election for the student rep role but will do so over the next couple of weeks. Under general business at the AGM there was a good discussion on fundraising and a group will be forming over the next couple of weeks to follow up on this and get some activities underway. If you indicated you could help with that on the registration form you will be hearing from someone soon. WRC Subs The remaining WRC sub of $400 is due by the end of October. Raewyn sent a reminder out the other day and it is important we pay the club on time – so your attention to this is appreciated
Uniforms Uniforms have been ordered. Your squad manager will issue them when ready. If you have not paid, please do so asap. Thank you. Resources Have a look on our rowing website for links to different resources. https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/resources.html This includes the OCRC Club Community Expectations which holds the code of conduct for rowers, coaches and support people. The club rules are also available here. Rowit - https://www.rowit.co.nz/ This is a great site for parents to keep in touch with the live results while the students are away at regattas. View the Day Sheet for race events, times and results. Rowers can also check their race entries here. New members and those not yet signed up, should ask to be added to the 'Onslow College Rowing' Facebook page. This is a good way of a keeping up with reminder notices for regatta trips and events, as well as photos and other things happening with the club. Book fair The Book fair cleared $6,200 which will go towards coach costs. This was another marathon effort from Deidre and the team and is a huge contribution to keeping our rowing programme running. Thanks Deidre and everyone who contributed! Deidre is looking for someone to hand over the lead tole on this to for next year – so if you are interested please seek Deidre out and discuss – I am sure she’ll have lots of knowledge to hand over. Grant We have received a $2000 grant from the Hutt Mana Community Trust. This will cover coach costs at camps and Regattas. I attended a function in Upper Hutt to receive the grant on behalf of the club earlier this month. Thanks to Donna Sherlock for getting the Grant application in on our behalf and to the trust for the grant.

Your enthusiasm, helpfulness, willingness to learn and to work as a team, have been inspiring.” Other Squads: Our Experienced boys will train as one crew and will be coached by Jared Cumming and Warwick Fowlie. This includes U16’s, under 17’s and U18’s. As indicated above, all girls will be in a single squad and will be co-coached by Tufi Sele and Brent Dunshea Squad Manager roles We will confirm squad managers shortly – however I would like a volunteer to look after the experienced boys crew this season so I can devote more time to the president role (assuming I am reconfirmed!) I am happy to do a handover 😉 Norton cup regatta Save the date -Sat 28th Oct. This is the Norton Cup regatta held in Wellington. It will be the first regatta for the novices and we be racing as Wellington Rowing Club. WRC singlets will be issued to the novices on the day. Parent help If you would like to help at a regatta or camp during the season or want to find out what is involved in being parent help then contact Stephanie OCRC AGM – Put it in your Calendar now! When: Thursday 26th October, 7:30pm Where: Student Centre, Onslow College Keith, our secretary, wll be sending out the formal notice, papers and Proxy voting forms for the AGM within the next few days. If you can attend we would love to see you there, and if not please consider giving your proxy vote to another representative. We need a quorum of 14. All rowers and parents are encouraged to attend. The main purpose is to reconfirm the committee for the coming year and receive our financial and other reports. Each family has one vote per rower represented. We do not have any remits to pass this time – so it should conclude quickly. WRC Subs Thanks everyone for paying the winter training/LTR sub in a timely manner. Now that squads are confirmed, the remaining WRC sub of $400 is due by the end of October.
Summer Camp Due to the clash with Wellington College we felt it best to move the camp dates as the logistics of having two large groups sharing the facilities was not desirable. Accordingly the new dates are:
Uniform Orders New uniform orders will be taken in October including polos, hoodies, caps and rowsuits for experienced rowers. A separate notice will come out about this soon Book fair Countdown to the book fair has begun! It is next weekend (14-15 October). If you have been collecting books Deidre has already sent information out about sorting and delivering these to the book fair venue, the Wharewaka, on Friday evening between 4-8pm. Season Calendar Check out the season Calendar in the OCRC website to view all events and dates for the season. https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/events.html LTR Camp Wrap-up Stephanie (LTR co-ordinator extraordinaire) has provided a wrap up report on the camp: “Another successful Onslow College learn to row camp was completed over the first weekend of the school holidays. We had 17 keen novices perfecting their rowing skills under the nurture and guidance of our experienced rowers. Two of our 4 days provided perfect Wanganui water conditions with the remaining time interestingly still rowable! Not sure if it is actually possible to sink a boat? But I think our senior boys eight actually enjoyed the experience of 'surf rowing'. While the senior girls were kept busy bailing their singles for fear of losing jandles as they nearly floated out of the boat! So just when the novices thought they might get a weather reprieve, luckily calmer water was found up river for everyone to continue their 3 trainings per day. We finished the camp with our annual LTR regatta where crews of novice rowers mixed amongst our experienced rowers to vie for the revered Warrick Fowlie gumboot trophy. Team 'Boomfa' of lane 1, coxed by the very capable Ella, won the race and the rights to autograph the strip of strapping tape that wraps the gumboot. Commiserations to the overall losing team 'Sumer ditched training to go to the movies with Constance' (maybe Sumer shouldn't have ditched - or perhaps it was something to do with the fact that boats in lane 1 won every race!) It looked like everyone had a great time at camp and probably came home quite tired, but with a huge advancement in rowing skills for the novices and a great start to the experienced rowers' season training. A huge thank you to our fabulous coaches, Jared, Tufi, Jason, Dylan, William, Warrick, Alick, Mel and to Terry and Deidre for organising and coaching yet another LTR camp. Also a big thank you to the parent help who ensure our rowers and coaches are fed, watered, happy and healthy. And ultimately thank you to all of the rowers who are a great group of students that are keen to give their best which makes the camp enjoyable for everyone.” |
