The Learn To Row (LTR) Programme is designed specifically to give students a taste of what rowing is all about.
Students will be taken through training sessions on and off the water. These sessions will include equipment familiarisation, rowing techniques, fitness training, rowing machine (erg) training etc.
The programme will run three days a week for 6 weeks. We have endevoured to run the programme to have as little impact on any students current winter sporting commitments.
Learn To Row sessions at the Wellington Rowing Club:
It is imperative that the students attend a minimum of two sessions per week.
At the end of the LTR programme, a short camp is held in Wanganui. Students who wish to continue rowing competitively over the 2023-24 season are selected from Learn To Row candidates. Selection into the Onslow College Rowing Team will either be made prior to the LTR Camp or after the camp. The LTR Coach will determine the selection process early in the LTR programme and all participants will be advised. Selection for competitive crews takes account of the whole person, not just athletic ability.
Rowing Clothing: Tee-shirt and shorts or leggings (dri-fit type tee-shirt and bike shorts), thermal top, thick warm socks, hat, jandles or beach shoes, sun screen lotion.
Transport: Generally, the students travel together after school on Fridays via the 3.29pm train from Raroa Station into town and then walk to the rowing club. On Tuesday, Onslow College has a late start and the students return to school via the train to Johnsonville. It is also a good idea to find out who else lives in your suburb, so that you can car pool other days if required.
