MAADI Selection Process

ONSLOW COLLEGE ROWING CLUB: FORMAL PROCEDURE

SELECTION OF CREWS TO ATTEND MAADI CUP (NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS) REGATTA
ADOPTED BY THE OCRC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 2016

The Maadi Cup Regatta is a New Zealand Championship event.  It is the single biggest school-aged sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere and annually attracts well over 2,000 competitors.  OCRC recognises that attendance at Maadi Cup is a privilege, and that the opportunity to compete at a Maadi Cup Regatta is highly sought after by all of our rowers.

The following procedure strikes a balance between the need to send crews that are competitive on a national stage; and our intention to ensure that all OCRC rowers who row a full 3 or 4 seasons with our club will have an opportunity to attend at least one Maadi Cup Regatta.

When Maadi Cup is held in the North Island

When Maadi Cup Regattas are held at Karapiro in Cambridge, crews who are considered capable of making a D Final or above in their chosen event will be eligible to attend.  On a case-by-case basis, rowers or crews who do not meet the eligibility criteria may still be selected to compete at a Maadi Cup Regatta at Karapiro if the coaches consider that special circumstances apply.  This could include providing specific rowers or crews with an opportunity to compete at least once at a Maadi Cup regatta before they leave our club.

The assessment as to eligibility will be made by the OCRC coaches collectively, under the guidance of the Lead Coach.

When Maadi Cup is held in the South Island

Because of the logistics and costs associated with OCRC crews attending regattas in the South Island, the eligibility criteria for selection to compete at a Maadi Cup Regatta held at Twizel is more difficult to achieve.  When Maadi Cup Regattas are held at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel, only those crews who are considered likely to make a B final or above in their chosen event will be eligible to attend.

The assessment as to eligibility will be made by the OCRC coaches collectively, under the guidance of the Lead Coach.

 Consultation with parents

OCRC recognises that attendance at any Maadi Cup Regatta is a significant financial commitment for parents, and also requires students to be away from school for a full week.  For that reason, after the KR 2 Regatta (Cambridge Town Cup) in late January/ early February each year, the Lead Coach will ask all parents to confirm that they are willing for their child to be considered for Maadi should they qualify.  It will be made clear at this stage that if parents agree that their child can be considered, then they are also making a commitment for their child to attend if selected. This will be done before any selection decisions are made.

This will enable coaches/ parents and students to develop some common understandings and expectations; and it will also avoid subsequent disappointment should members of some crews not be able to attend Maadi for that year.  It also enables all concerned to problem-solve in light of any difficulties that may come to the fore (for example, financial constraints) where it may be possible to find creative solutions.

The role of the OCRC Executive Committee

The OCRC Executive Committee has a role in ensuring that the above process and eligibility criteria are applied appropriately.  It will do this in consultation with the Lead Coach.

The Committee does not have any role in selection of individuals and/ or crews.

This means that prior to any announcement of any crews to attend a Maadi Cup regatta the Lead Coach must inform the committee of the selected Maadi attendees and provide clarification where the Committee has any questions relating to the way in which the process or eligibility criteria have been applied. The Committee must agree that the process has been appropriate.

Once the Committee has agreed that the process was appropriate, it must endorse the selections made and all members of the Committee are expected to support these decisions once they have been announced.

 Announcing selected crews

All crew and/ or individual selections will be announced at the same time, no later than 4 full weeks prior to the date on which the Maadi Cup Regatta for the relevant year commences.

All selections will be circulated together to the wider OCRC community via email from the Lead Coach.

In order to avoid uncertainty and confusion amongst rowers, coaches should not inform their own crews of their selection prior to all selections being announced collectively.

Notification of Maadi crews to Onslow College

As a courtesy, the College Representative will inform the Principal of the College and the College Sports Director of the crews selected to attend the Maadi Cup Regatta each year.  The College should be informed of crew/ individual selections at the same time that these are announced to the wider community by the Lead Coach.

In summary – a four step process

In summary – this is the process that will be followed in relation to all Maadi Cup regatta selections:

  1. After KR 2, the Lead Coach asks all parents whether they want their rower to be considered for selection for the Maadi Cup Regatta for that year.  When parents agree that their rower can be considered for Maadi, they are also committing to send their rower to Maadi should their rower be selected.
  2. Coaches meet to discuss and select boats and crews.  Only those rowers whose parents have confirmed they may be considered for selection will be selected.
  3. Lead Coach informs committee of the coaches’ selection and clarifies any questions that the committee might have.
  4. Selections are communicated to the wider group as well as to the school.

Agreed by the OCRC Executive Committee September 2016
