Season Wrap up and Celebration
The summer season is over and most crews have had individual celebrations – however we have one or two formalities still to go to wrap up the season and to farewell our rowers who have now finished their Onslow College rowing careers. We would be delighted if you will all join us at our end of season function: At the Student Centre on Wednesday 3 May at 5:30 to 7:30 in the evening. Please bring a plate to share. All OCRC and alumni members are very welcome to attend. Wellington Club Function The WRC Prize Giving is on Friday the 5th May at 6:30 pm at the Wharewaka next door to the club. There are further details about the celebration weekend on the Club Facebook page and members are encouraged to attend – especially to support any Onslow rowers who may be nominated for awards. Maadi 2017 A great effort by all of the Onslow rowers among some very tough national competition. Again half of our rowing contingent achieved finals and the experience of participating in a Maadi Cup regatta was hugely beneficial to everyone. For our results table see the the 'Events' page. Olivia Clark was also selected to trial for the North Island U18 team which will be held over Easter at Lake Karapiro. Congratulations Olivia and good luck! Executive Committee The Executive Committee will meet again on Monday 24 April. We will discuss, among other things, doing another survey to review 2016/ 17 season, to get your feedback. I will be in touch around June about this once the committee have agreed a process. If there are any other matters that you would like the Committee to discuss then please let me know. Equally if you would like to consider a role on the committee at the AGM in October, then myself or other members of the committee would be happy to spend time with you taking you through what’s involved. Thanks to our coaches A huge thanks to our amazing coaches, who have worked tirelessly this season and have really given so much to our rowers in developing their rowing, in time, and in growing their love of the sport and developing them as sportspeople.
Thank you to parents The volunteer coordinator (Stephanie), would like to say a big thank you to all parents for taking on various parent support roles this season. Parent help is essential in rowing in order to get our rowers and coaches to events they want to attend and to aid in the operation of a successful rowing season. With our small group, every family has stepped forward to take on some kind of support role which has been fantastic - from transport, organising school forms, regatta and camp coordinators, parent help, transport to Ruamahanga, boat maintenance, boat loading, squad managers, kitchen gear, first aid, fundraising & grants, accommodation, uniforms, lunch orders, committee roles, etc etc etc. So THANK YOU very much - your time and effort is much appreciated. It has been a fabulous rowing season with a great bunch of enthusiastic and committed students, coaches, parents and other supporters. Thinking ahead to next season... if you would like to continue in a particular role you did this year, then that would be perfect! Steph will check in with you before we kick off again, so hopefully your son/daughter is keen to do another round of rowing, otherwise let Steph know at some stage if you want a change of scene or want to pick up a different support role. Maintenance and Cleaning We need to get the Big tent out for cleaning sometime over the holiday break as it came home from Maadi very muddy! We need a sunny break in the weather for this – so expect an email seeking crews to assist May is our usual maintenance month, and all crews are expected to contribute to this. Coaches will be in contact with their squads directly to let them know what is expected of them during the month. Finance Update Final rower statements for the season are in the process of being sent out. Your prompt payment is appreciated, however if you have any issues, don't hesitate to contact Raewyn on [email protected] or (027) 221-4571. Winter rowing season (optional) The winter rowing season starts in June, after Queens Birthday weekend. I will send out a note advising of specifics after our Exec Committee meeting on 24 April, but if you have any queries in the interim then please contact your coaches directly. Recruiting next season’s novices The Learn to Row programme begins in early August. We plan to run an active recruitment drive across Onslow College and its feeder-intermediate schools during the winter months. The Executive Committee will be setting up a sub-committee to manage this at our 24 April meeting. Given our rule-change at the recent SGM we need to make sure that all prospective rowers within the school are aware of this and look to join. Any ideas for this are welcomed. Last Day Sheet I will be in touch on an as-needs-be basis throughout the winter, to advise you of details around the survey; winter training; the beginning of the LTR programme and details of the LTR camp; and our next AGM which will be held in October this year – early in Term 4. Enjoy the winter ‘break’ everyone. To our rowers this no-doubt involves participation in winter sports for many of you – I look forward to seeing most of you back for the next season, with fresh goals for rowing, energised and keen to go! To the parents, thanks so much for your ongoing support of the club and your athletes – it has been a pleasure working with you all this season
