OCRC DaySheet – 21/1/21
Kia Ora everyone I hope you have all had a good Xmas and new year – full of training for the rowers as we gear up for the end of season major regattas. Dates for your Diary · Sat-Sun 23-24th Jan – RUA training trip · Wed 27th Jan – depart for NIRC regatta, Karapiro · Fri 5th Feb & 9th Feb – school starts for Yr 9’s and Yr 13 Peer Supporters · Sat-Sun 6th-7th Feb – RUA training trip · Wed 10th Feb – all school starts · Sat 13th Feb – McLachlan Shield regatta, Wellington · Sat-Sun 20-21st Feb – RUA training trip · Sat-Sun 27-28th Feb – RUA training trip · Wed 3rd Mar – depart for NISSC, Karapiro · Sat-Sun 13-14th Mar – RUA training trip for Maadi Crews · Sat 20th Mar – depart for MAADI, Karapiro (Maadi Crews) Save the Rua dates Please note the Rua training dates listed above and try to save these last 3-4 weekends for additional training. It will typically only be one day for most crews with the seniors staying over night to look after the boats. As we head into the end of the season with only 5 weeks to NISSC, making the most of some additional water time will be very beneficial. If you are selected for Maadi, then you are expected to attend the Rua trip 13-14th March. Reminder of the gear list for the Rua
NISSC (info for Novices) The training efforts for the season are ultimately geared towards competing in the North Island Secondary School Champs as the regatta finale for the whole squad. This is a very prestigious regatta where all schools in the North Island compete without the Club adults’ attendance and some of the top school crews will be awarded medals in their events. While only 3 crews can get a medal in an event, every event needs lots of athletes to make it a race. Success comes in many forms and while I’m sure there will be many personal and crew bests being achieved by our Onslow rowers, a successful season is also about having gained skills for teamwork, organisation, time management, friendships, work ethic, fitness etc. This regatta may mark the end of the season for some rowers. Maadi Selection The Maadi Cup Regatta is a New Zealand Championship event. It is the single biggest secondary school sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere and annually attracts well over 2000 athletes and 10,000 spectators on finals days. OCRC recognises that attendance at Maadi Cup is a privilege and therefore there is a selection process to attend this regatta. More information about this will be emailed just after the NIRC regatta. Details on the selection process can be found on the website: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/regattas--camps.html NIRC (North Island Rowing Champs) Departs next Wed 27th Jan Regatta Fri – Sun Returns Sun 31st Jan Be at bus loading at 7am, school top quad. Departing 7.30am. Thank you to all coaches and parents on duty who are heading up. Cross over of sport seasons As school starts up again and a new season of summer sport kicks off and winter sports trials begin. Please remember the school policy to complete your commitments to your current season sport especially when heading into National tournaments. If there are other sport trainings that will clash with rowing, then your commitment should be to rowing. If there are other sport trials, then please talk to the selectors and your coach to discuss options. Professional photography Due to the positive response from rowers, we have contracted Light and Motion to take professional photos at the remaining regattas at Karapiro. He will ensure to capture at least one photo of every crew from every event at each regatta. Typically, there he takes far more photos anyway. He does do great photos. (This is not the same photographer as Rowing Celebration, which we used last year). A small charge of $14 will be added to your account. Final fundraiser Due to the reduced funds raised this year because of Covid, the committee was thinking it might be good to do an additional fundraiser for the benefit of rower own funds. If anyone is keen to take this on and organise it, the please let Marie Butel know. This might simply be a car wash and vacuum service one weekend day at school. Keep it simple and quick. Probably done after Maadi. Marie: [email protected] OCRC bank account While most of our rowing costs get charged to school, sometimes we ask for payment into the OCRC BNZ account. This account number got changed 2 years ago, but there is still the occasional payment being put into the old account. Please use the following account number when asked to pay this way. BNZ: 02-050-0232829-00 Thank you to Zoe and Olivia As you know Zoe had to leave us after camp due to extra work commitments. So just saying a big thank you to you Zoe for coming to coach our Onslow Novices this season. You have set them up well and your time and effort has been very much appreciated. And then thank you to Olivia Clark, who has stepped in to take over the Novice Boys coaching – while she is still stuck in NZ doing online study! Also very much appreciated that you can help out in between your own studies. Hoping you get back to Yale in August. (roll on vaccines!) Website Check out the website for the season calendar, regatta results and other info. https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com Rowit - http://rowit.nz/ This is a great site for parents to keep in touch with the live results while the students are away at regattas. View the Day Sheet for race events, times and results. Rowers can also check their race entries here. Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/105369186474338/ New members and those not yet signed up, should ask to be added to the 'Onslow College Rowing' Facebook page. This is a good way of a keeping up with reminder notices for regatta trips and events, as well as photos and other things happening with the club. Finally, all the best for NIRC. Kia Ora everyone Only 4.5 weeks until the first major regatta of the season. Hard to believe December is rolling in fast. Interesting note – we currently have 14 of our 46 rowers for the season who are siblings! And then 4 more who are a rower-coach combo. That’s a third of our squad – nothing like keeping it in the family! Dates for your Diary · Mon 16th Nov – Exams start · Sat 21st Nov – Rua trip (as exams permit) · Sat 28th Nov – Wellington Champs regatta · Wed 9th Dec – depart for KR1, Karapiro · Sun 13th Dec – return from KR1 · Wed 9th Dec – last day of school OCRC Committee Thank you to everyone who attended the recent AGM and senior farewell. Welcome to the new OCRC Committee for the 2020-21 season:
Book Fair Fundraiser Thanks again to everyone with helping on the Book Fair, great to see everyone contributing their bit and particular thanks to the Book Fair Committee – Matt & Maria Seymour (huge effort!), Clare Stanley, Teresa Jordan, Tina Manker and me! Fantastic that we raised $5500. This will contribute to our coach expenses this season and now means we can keep our OCRC subs to our usual cost, rather than having to pay more if we had not done a fundraiser this year. 1841 Raffle Fundraiser The coordinator for this regular fundraiser is now Marie Butel. The same roster issued earlier is being followed, but any questions or help with changes, to Marie. Funds raised go towards the NISSC bus cost. Marie Butel - [email protected] OCRC Subs OCRC subs have been set at $200 for the season. This is the same cost as usual – thanks to the book fair fundraising efforts. $100 is a contribution to coach expenses (so that coaches are not generally out of pocket with all the work they put into a season of coaching rowing for our kids). $100 goes towards boat maintenance. There are always general maintenance costs through the season and every second year our racing boat fleet stays in Cambridge after the Maadi Cup for a good refurbishment. This will be happening this year and the funds built up over a 2 year period, pay for this. OCRC subs will be added to your school account shortly and should be paid prior to the school break up. WRC Subs due WRC subs. Everyone should have the WRC fee on your school account. Please pay asap. Total WRC is $700 for a rower, $200 for a cox. Uniforms & Payments due Uniforms. All uniforms have been issued and are due for payment. Fees are on your school account. Please pay asap. There were a couple of key entry issues by school for charging of fees on school accounts, so if you want to recheck your charges, here are the uniform costs of each piece:
Parent requests – there have been a couple of requests for parent hoodies and bucket hats, so if you want one – then you are welcome to order (more PR for OCRC). Initials “SUPPORTER”. Last uniform order is being placed together with the bucket hats early next week. Summer Away Event Payments Still on the topic of fees. We have to submit the budgets to school for all summer events before school closes for the summer. Therefore, you will also see costs for KR1, Summer Camp and NICC on your school account by early Dec. If you can pay for these when they appear on your account, that would be useful, but definitely before the event date. There is a school policy of ‘no pay, no play’. So before you get on the bus, please have the event paid for – thank you! On the plus side, by the time we pay for these 3 summer events, that is basically 80% of the season paid for. Summer Event Availability Please let your coach and Squad Manager know asap if you are not available for any of the summer events:
Subway Orders You have been issued the subway order spreadsheet – you need to submit your order. This is lunch on the way up to Karapiro and is included in the cost of the regatta. There are a lot of students who have not submitted an order which means there will be a lot of vege subs being ordered on your behalf!! Please contact Amy Mackiewicz if you have any questions. She will be supplying the orders to Subway soon. Amy - [email protected] Parent Help for Karapiro Regattas This is a first call for parent help for the season camps and regattas. If you think you might like to help on a Karapiro regatta this season, then see the following dates and let me know. Thank you to parents who have already offered for KR1 and summer camp. Great to have that organised early!
Parent Help for Wellington Regattas Louise is still asking for volunteers for the Wellington regattas:

However, to simplify the day, we will only be running the book fair for one day and will not be doing a bake sale or a sausage sizzle. Therefore we will only require a few helpers on each brief shift which will allow parents to also head to the regatta to watch your child and their crews race. The first draft roster will allocate parents to shifts which we can adjust when we confirm the crew racing times closer to the day. So please be prepared to be flexible on the roster duty. Sponsorship If anyone is interested in sponsorship opportunities with our club, then please contact Stephanie. [email protected] Onslow College owns our own boat trailer that has 2 sides available for company or promotional signage. The boat trailer is parked prominently on the Wellington waterfront for the whole year and travels numerous times throughout the North Island between Wellington, Wanganui, Cambridge and also to Twizel in the South Island every other year. The 5 day away regattas in Cambridge generate thousands of attendees from all over the North Island and the trailer has high visibility to these attendees, including just as many adults as students as the regattas are school and club adult events with lots of adult support crews. It is basically a travelling bill board! Sponsorship could help the Onslow College students with equipment and capital purchases for the benefit of existing and future generations of Onslow rowers. Otherwise, suggestion of use of sponsorship funds or purchases is also welcomed. If you are still playing winter sport, then remember to complete your winter sports commitments before using the LTR days for commencing rowing training but if you can fit in both then that would be beneficial. Please encourage others to come along and try out the LTR programme. It is a 5 week programme, $110, see the website for more details: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/learn-to-row-2019.html There will also be information in the Notices and Bulletin for the next couple of weeks and Year 9 PE class erg sessions. I hope everyone is keeping well and occupied! Such extraordinary times! A few notices to finish the season: MAADI CANCELLED Maadi is officially cancelled for 2020 along with a range of other rowing NZ events and of course a huge array of other sports and events throughout NZ planned for the near future. See this link for further details. https://www.rowingnz.kiwi/Story?Action=View&Story_id=702# OCRC ROWING EVENT CHANGES To clarify our pending rowing events (as advised by school):
We will be in touch prior to the start of the new season and will aim to have a beginning of season celebration, where we can then farewell our seniors. MAADI TEES Just a note on Maadi for crews that were to be heading there, we are currently in the process of un-doing bookings etc. The Tees did not go to production but they can be produced if still wanted. If anyone would still like to order, can you please reconfirm your order with Helen including the quantity. If we get enough, then we can confirm the order, otherwise it will be cancelled. THANK YOU'S On behalf of the OCRC committee, I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone for a fabulous 2020 rowing season. Thank you to our wonderful coaches: -Jason, Brent, Paul, Fin, Georgia, Jared, Jakob, Issac, Maggie, Georgia, Tina, Warwick, Terry & Deidre. As always, you give so much of your time and energy to our school rowing club. You serve as great role models to our students and their achievements and success are a credit to your skills, experience and nurturing. A huge thank you to you all. Thank you to the students: Our rowers are at the heart of everything that the club does. You are a fabulous group of students, there has been a great vibe to the group this year (I have personally enjoyed the bus trip and the camaraderie you show). You know how to work incredibly hard and also have a lot of fun together. Your representation of Onslow College is a credit to your work ethic and team spirit. Thank you students! Thank you to the parents: The rowing programme doesn't operate without the input and support from parents, so thank you to everyone contributing to the season - from helping at regattas and camps, running fundraisers and doing grants, doing a season role like first aid, subway lunches, cleaning kitchen gear, organising transport, being involved with the committee, transporting your students to trainings etc etc! Thank you parents! Noted thanks to Mike Woods for the Treasure role, Kristin Aitken for the Secretary role, to Matt Seymour and his book fair team, Mel Dingle for the grants, squad managers - Katrina Curry, Paula Hammond, Lynda Duncan, Ellie Lockhart and regatta and camp coordinators this season - Lynda Duncan, Marie Butel, Karen Forsyth, Victoria Bennett. Thank you to school: Thank you to school, to Sheena Millar, Principal and our Rowing Club Patron, to Penny Kinsella and to Kylie Summers, the school Sports Director, for your support, encouragement and facilitation of rowing functions. Thank you! BOOK FAIR Just one final plug for the book fair. This will be held in August. So even if you are unsure if you will come back for another season or you are a senior having finished rowing, please still help out with the book fair as your way of giving back to the sport and the community that has given so much to you. Thank you! Finally, Have a good break everyone, enjoy your winter sports and see you in winter training and at the book fair! (all optimistically hopefully!) Awesome achievement! Jamie has represented Wellington Rowing Club and it’s affiliates at the Central RPC for the past 2 years while studying at Canterbury University. Do not share drink bottles! Wash hands! Please do not share drink bottles or share eaten food. If you need a small bottle to take in the boat for a race, then use for e.g. 300ml bottle. Sharing a drink bottle with someone who is sick is the fastest way to ensure your boat is out of the race! With the coronavirus emerging in NZ, hand washing before eating is more important than ever. Nutrition The effect of diet on performance is significant. Know what to eat and when to eat it. See the Nutrition guidelines on the website: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/nutrition.html Rowit - http://rowit.nz/ This is a great site for parents to keep in touch with the live results while the students are away at regattas. Finally, good luck to everyone for NISSC, you have all worked really hard to get to this point and for those heading off to Maadi in Twizel at the end of the month. It has been a very busy summer, having accomplished two major Karaprio regattas, our summer camp and several Rua trips and not to mention the ramped up training schedule as we approach the serious end of the season. Dates for your Diary · 22/2, 29/2, 7/3 - Weekend Rua trips · Wed 11 – 15th Mar – NISSC, Cambridge · Sat 28th Mar – 5th Apr – Maadi Cup, Twizel · Tbc – end of season celebration Save the dates for Rua trainings There are likely Rua trainings all weekends prior to NISSC. So save the dates but your squad coach will reconfirm details on attendance. · 22-23 Feb · 29 Feb-1 Mar · 7-8 Mar Huge thanks to the coaches for your added commitment to get our rowers to peak performance for the finale season regattas. Payments Just a reminder that regatta and camp fees are charged to your student account for payment. However, there are a few miscellaneous payments sometimes required for payment directly to the OCRC account and this bank account number was changed a year ago from the previous account. Please use the following account number: BNZ 02-0506-0232829-000 1841 Raffle and NISSC bus funds Thank you rowers for your work contributing to the 1841 Raffle fundraising throughout the off season and to date. We now have $1400 to put towards the NISSC bus. This is an easy fund raising contribution that we are keen to continue throughout the coming year. So please ensure you do your rostered day even if you are undecided if you will continue with rowing for next season. It is a one-off half an hour’s effort before next season starts and if not continuing, then it is a nice send-off gift to the club! Thank you! Contact Katrina Curry if you need to change or confirm details: [email protected] OCRC Book fair The annual OCRC book fair will kick off again in Sept or October. This is our one major fundraiser for the season and contributes funds to coach reimbursement, equipment expenses and some rower funds which reduces the overall season cost for everyone. There is a well formulated process to run the book fair and everyone contributes to the event but we are also looking for new members for the book fair committee. No experience required and all ‘training’ provided. Please contact Matt Seymour: [email protected] WRC Survey All WRC members (rowers and coaches) should have received a survey. So fill it in if you can. It’s good to provide a school perspective. Thank you and farewell to our Uni coaches Our Uni coaches have now headed back to Uni. So thank you very much to Georgia (Waikato), Maggie (Canterbury) and Isaac (Otago) for your work and dedication to our Onslow students this season. We will see some of you at the upcoming regattas but all the best for your studies in the year ahead. Welcome to new rowers With the start of the new school year, we have 2 new rowers, to welcome into the OCRC squad. Franzi is an international student from Switzerland joining the senior girls squad as an experienced rower and Maya who has transferred from Marsden, has joined the novice girls squad. Also a belated welcome to Max and Teneka who joined the experienced squads during the season. So welcome to you all! Welcome to new committee members The OCRC committee has co-opted two new members onto the committee to replace Rachael Mora who stepped down recently with the withdrawal of Ben from rowing. Thank you to Rachael and family for the time and input you have given to Onslow rowing, hugely appreciated. And now welcome to Katrina Curry and Brent Cooper. Thank you for stepping up to the role. LTR Incident Review Update The Executive Committee, together with several people from the LTR camp met with Principal Sheena Millar and Deputy Principal Penny Kinsella to review the received submissions from the request of the LTR camp incident.
