OCRC DaySheet – 21/1/21
Kia Ora everyone I hope you have all had a good Xmas and new year – full of training for the rowers as we gear up for the end of season major regattas. Dates for your Diary · Sat-Sun 23-24th Jan – RUA training trip · Wed 27th Jan – depart for NIRC regatta, Karapiro · Fri 5th Feb & 9th Feb – school starts for Yr 9’s and Yr 13 Peer Supporters · Sat-Sun 6th-7th Feb – RUA training trip · Wed 10th Feb – all school starts · Sat 13th Feb – McLachlan Shield regatta, Wellington · Sat-Sun 20-21st Feb – RUA training trip · Sat-Sun 27-28th Feb – RUA training trip · Wed 3rd Mar – depart for NISSC, Karapiro · Sat-Sun 13-14th Mar – RUA training trip for Maadi Crews · Sat 20th Mar – depart for MAADI, Karapiro (Maadi Crews) Save the Rua dates Please note the Rua training dates listed above and try to save these last 3-4 weekends for additional training. It will typically only be one day for most crews with the seniors staying over night to look after the boats. As we head into the end of the season with only 5 weeks to NISSC, making the most of some additional water time will be very beneficial. If you are selected for Maadi, then you are expected to attend the Rua trip 13-14th March. Reminder of the gear list for the Rua
NISSC (info for Novices) The training efforts for the season are ultimately geared towards competing in the North Island Secondary School Champs as the regatta finale for the whole squad. This is a very prestigious regatta where all schools in the North Island compete without the Club adults’ attendance and some of the top school crews will be awarded medals in their events. While only 3 crews can get a medal in an event, every event needs lots of athletes to make it a race. Success comes in many forms and while I’m sure there will be many personal and crew bests being achieved by our Onslow rowers, a successful season is also about having gained skills for teamwork, organisation, time management, friendships, work ethic, fitness etc. This regatta may mark the end of the season for some rowers. Maadi Selection The Maadi Cup Regatta is a New Zealand Championship event. It is the single biggest secondary school sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere and annually attracts well over 2000 athletes and 10,000 spectators on finals days. OCRC recognises that attendance at Maadi Cup is a privilege and therefore there is a selection process to attend this regatta. More information about this will be emailed just after the NIRC regatta. Details on the selection process can be found on the website: https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com/regattas--camps.html NIRC (North Island Rowing Champs) Departs next Wed 27th Jan Regatta Fri – Sun Returns Sun 31st Jan Be at bus loading at 7am, school top quad. Departing 7.30am. Thank you to all coaches and parents on duty who are heading up. Cross over of sport seasons As school starts up again and a new season of summer sport kicks off and winter sports trials begin. Please remember the school policy to complete your commitments to your current season sport especially when heading into National tournaments. If there are other sport trainings that will clash with rowing, then your commitment should be to rowing. If there are other sport trials, then please talk to the selectors and your coach to discuss options. Professional photography Due to the positive response from rowers, we have contracted Light and Motion to take professional photos at the remaining regattas at Karapiro. He will ensure to capture at least one photo of every crew from every event at each regatta. Typically, there he takes far more photos anyway. He does do great photos. (This is not the same photographer as Rowing Celebration, which we used last year). A small charge of $14 will be added to your account. Final fundraiser Due to the reduced funds raised this year because of Covid, the committee was thinking it might be good to do an additional fundraiser for the benefit of rower own funds. If anyone is keen to take this on and organise it, the please let Marie Butel know. This might simply be a car wash and vacuum service one weekend day at school. Keep it simple and quick. Probably done after Maadi. Marie: [email protected] OCRC bank account While most of our rowing costs get charged to school, sometimes we ask for payment into the OCRC BNZ account. This account number got changed 2 years ago, but there is still the occasional payment being put into the old account. Please use the following account number when asked to pay this way. BNZ: 02-050-0232829-00 Thank you to Zoe and Olivia As you know Zoe had to leave us after camp due to extra work commitments. So just saying a big thank you to you Zoe for coming to coach our Onslow Novices this season. You have set them up well and your time and effort has been very much appreciated. And then thank you to Olivia Clark, who has stepped in to take over the Novice Boys coaching – while she is still stuck in NZ doing online study! Also very much appreciated that you can help out in between your own studies. Hoping you get back to Yale in August. (roll on vaccines!) Website Check out the website for the season calendar, regatta results and other info. https://ocrowingclub.weebly.com Rowit - http://rowit.nz/ This is a great site for parents to keep in touch with the live results while the students are away at regattas. View the Day Sheet for race events, times and results. Rowers can also check their race entries here. Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/105369186474338/ New members and those not yet signed up, should ask to be added to the 'Onslow College Rowing' Facebook page. This is a good way of a keeping up with reminder notices for regatta trips and events, as well as photos and other things happening with the club. Finally, all the best for NIRC.
